Spyware + Malware = Very Bad
Spy/malware is computer software that exploits infected computers for commercial gain when it gets installed on to a personal computer. Once installed Spy/malware is then allowed to intercept or take partial control over the interaction with your computer also without your informed consent. The more types of Spy/malware that gets installed onto a PC can lead to a completely useless computer, as each bit of Spy/malware will be trying to earn their masters some money so their having a battle over who displays what and where on your PC making the poor old thing have a bit of a break down until all of the Spy/malware has been removed from the Windows OS (de loused). Spy/malware can also interfere with user control of the computer by
  • Installing additional software.
  • Redirecting Web browser activity.
  • Change computer settings resulting in slow connection speeds.
  • Changing home pages.
  • Loss of Internet or other programs.
  • Diverting advertising revenue to a third party.
  • Disabling software firewalls and anti-virus software.
  • Reducing browser security settings.

Adware Annoying
Adware if this was listed in The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy it would have an entry saying
Adware.... see Earth (mostly harmless)
which is what Adware is .... its mostly harmless more to the point its just plain annoying as any software that contains Adware displays advertisements, whether or not you wanted to see it or gave your consent to see it although sometimes if you want free software then you just have to put up with it... or do you? NO! of course you don't just get another piece of software that dose the same job but doesn't contain the Adware. For example the Eudora mail client display advertisements as an alternative to shareware registration fees why bother using that when you can use The Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client which contains 100% no Adware.
Software displaying advertisements classify as "adware" because its advertising-supported software, but adware is not as Spy/malware i.e does not operate surreptitiously or mislead the user, but provides the user with a specific service all be it with a big helping of adverts. Hey I'd like some adverts over easy with a side order of pop up adverts and some big annoying flashy adverts you know the ones that are totally pointless... gee thanks for those.
Now just because its classed as adware most of it is sort of Spy/malware because its displaying advertisements depending on what it finds from spying on you. Software such as Gator Software by Claria Corporation's BargainBuddy by Exact Advertising's are examples of nightmare adware programs that directs money to the site that got you to install it and to Claria Corporation by displaying advertisements to the user based on what it can find out about your Internet habits these are generally served up as pop-up advertisements (turn off Java to stop em).

What can you do about it?
Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized best practices of computer security for detecting and removing spyware and adware from Microsoft Windows desktop computers, using Firefox web browser with plug ins can prevent installation of all manner of nasty bits of software but most of all don't run the Windows Administrator account your a user so be a user.
